The confirmation this week that Irish Water will be set up to deal with water services across the country generated a lot of dissatisfaction among members of Mayo County Council at their meeting on Monday last.

Cllr Damien Ryan this week put forward a notice of motion calling for the council to provide information boards in the towns of Ballinrobe and Cong, so local voluntary groups could put up notices of events coming up in the area. The idea got the full backing of the other members of the council. Director of services for the area Seamus Granahan told the members it might be better to bring the idea to the relevant SPC first so that proper countywide guidelines could be drawn up to ensure such a service would not be abused by commercial interests.

A number of councillors this week called on Mayo County Council to ensure that the clock in Ballinrobe town on the courthouse is restored to proper working order. Cllr Damien Ryan had included the item as part of a notice of motion for the Claremorris Electoral Area meeting this week.
